Lipoxin B4 (LXB4) is a naturally occurring bioactive lipid mediator derived from arachidonic acid, belonging to the lipoxin family of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). Traditionally recognized for its role in resolving inflammation, LXB4 has been identified by researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Toronto as a potent neuroprotective agent. It is endogenously secreted by resting astrocytes in the retina and optic nerve head. In preclinical models of glaucoma, LXB4 has demonstrated the ability to halt the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells and preserve visual function, even when administered after the onset of neurodegeneration. Due to its fundamental role in neuroprotection, it is also being explored for potential applications in other neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
