Lippia alba

Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E.Br. ex Britton and P. Wilson is an aromatic medicinal plant native to Central and South America belonging to the Verbenaceae family. It has been traditionally used for a wide range of conditions including respiratory ailments (asthma, bronchitis, cough, cold), digestive issues (nausea, flatulence), cardiovascular problems (hypertension), nervous system disorders (anxiety, depression, insomnia), pain management, inflammation, fever, and infectious diseases (influenza, measles, malaria). The plant contains several bioactive compounds, notably essential oils with various chemotypes (including citral, carvone, limonene, linalool, myrcene), flavonoids, and polyphenols. Pharmacologically, Lippia alba exhibits sedative and anesthetic properties (particularly via the GABAergic pathway), inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), reduces calcium influx, and demonstrates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities.
