Overview

Lippia alba ethanolic extract is a phytotherapeutic agent derived from the leaves of the South American medicinal herb *Lippia alba*. Developed by Fabio Carmona at the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, this specific extract utilizes a unique chemotype characterized by high concentrations of geranial and carvenone. The drug is primarily investigated for the prophylactic treatment of migraine disorders. Its mechanism of action is linked to the GABAergic system, where it is thought to modulate central nervous system activity by inhibiting GABA uptake and binding. In a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01259947), the oral administration of this extract significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of headache episodes in migraine patients, demonstrating a favorable safety profile with no reported side effects.
