Overview

Lippia citriodora (commonly known as lemon verbena) is a perennial plant native to South America and widely used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, sedative and carminative properties[1][4][5]. The medicinal effects are attributed to its rich content of polyphenols such as phenylpropanoid glycosides (notably verbascoside/acteoside), flavonoids and iridoid glycosides[4]. Lemon verbena extract has demonstrated antioxidant activity and the essential oil has shown antimicrobial properties. It is commonly consumed as an herbal tea or flavoring agent in foods and beverages. Some small clinical studies suggest potential benefits for improving lipid profiles in hypercholesterolemic individuals[4], but robust clinical data on efficacy or safety are lacking. Lemon verbena is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for human consumption[1][3].
