Overview
Lippia sidoides essential oil gel is an investigational phytopharmaceutical topical preparation containing 10% essential oil extracted from *Lippia sidoides* Cham. (Verbenaceae), a shrub native to Northeastern Brazil commonly known as Alecrim-pimenta. Developed by researchers at the University of Fortaleza (UNIFOR), the gel is intended for the treatment and prevention of dental plaque and gingivitis. The essential oil is characterized by high concentrations of the monoterpenes thymol and carvacrol, which provide potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In clinical trials, the gel has demonstrated significant reductions in plaque and gingival indices, showing efficacy comparable to the gold-standard antiseptic chlorhexidine, while potentially offering a natural alternative with fewer side effects.
