Liquid buccal mucosal graft (LBMG) is an experimental autologous tissue-based therapy being evaluated by the State University of New York - Upstate Medical University for the treatment of urethral strictures and bladder neck contractures. The procedure involves harvesting a small piece of buccal mucosa from the patient's inner cheek, morcellating it into a "liquid" form, and mixing it with fibrin glue (such as Tisseel). This mixture is then applied endoscopically to the site of a Direct Vision Internal Urethrotomy (DVIU) or bladder neck incision. By providing a biological scaffold and viable cells at the incision site, LBMG aims to promote healthy tissue regeneration and reduce the high recurrence rates typically associated with endoscopic urethrotomy alone, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open urethroplasty.
