Liquid elastic collodion is a medicinal formulation consisting primarily of a solution of nitrocellulose (also known as pyroxylin) in a mixture of ether and alcohol, manufactured to maintain stretch and flexibility after drying rather than form a rigid film. When applied to the skin, it rapidly dries to form a thin, flexible, elastic film that acts as a protective barrier or dressing. This film can cover wounds and hold other dressings in place, providing a degree of waterproof protection and reducing external contamination. The mechanism of action is physical, as it forms a protective seal over the treated area. Unlike rigid collodion, which is used mostly for cosmetic or theatrical purposes (e.g., creating the appearance of scars), elastic collodion is employed primarily in medical and surgical settings to cover and protect skin injuries, minor wounds, or surgical incisions[3][5][7]. The application of "liquid elastic collodion" does not involve biochemical activity on cellular targets; it acts through the creation of an elastic mechanical barrier.
