Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Colax PM is an oral liquid combination laxative developed by Strassenburg Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of constipation, including cases associated with infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures. It is a fixed-dose combination of three distinct laxative agents: sodium picosulfate, liquid paraffin, and magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia). Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that undergoes bacterial cleavage in the colon to form an active metabolite that stimulates peristalsis and mucosal secretion. Liquid paraffin acts as a lubricant laxative, coating the stool and intestinal wall to reduce friction and facilitate easier passage. Magnesium hydroxide functions as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the intestinal lumen to increase stool volume and soften hard stools. Together, these three components provide synergistic relief from constipation and reduce the straining associated with painful anorectal conditions.
