Emuliquen (often misspelled as Emoliquen) is a laxative product developed and marketed by the Spanish pharmaceutical company LAINCO S.A. It is primarily available in two formulations: Emuliquen Laxante, which is a combination of liquid paraffin and sodium picosulfate, and Emuliquen Simple, which contains only liquid paraffin. Liquid paraffin acts as a lubricant laxative by softening the stool and coating the intestinal wall to facilitate passage. Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that is metabolized by colonic bacteria into an active metabolite that stimulates the enteric nervous system to increase peristalsis. Emuliquen is indicated for the symptomatic relief of occasional constipation, particularly in patients with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or other painful conditions of the anus and rectum where straining should be avoided. A Phase IV clinical trial (NCT01154101) has evaluated its efficacy in improving patient comfort and reducing defecation effort in adults following proctological surgery.
