Liquidambar styraciflua pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua). [18] It is used for both the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with immediate hypersensitivity allergies to this specific pollen. [22] As a non-standardized pollen allergenic extract, it functions as a form of immunotherapy (allergy shots) to desensitize the immune system. [17] The treatment is intended to modulate the body's immune response, encouraging a shift from an allergic IgE-dominant reaction to a tolerance-based state characterized by increased production of IgG antibodies. [17, 22] This reduces the release of histamine and other mediators that cause allergy symptoms. [17, 22] It is administered via percutaneous, intradermal, or subcutaneous injection for skin testing and hyposensitization.
