Overview

Liquidambar styraciflua resin is a natural oily resin (balsam) obtained from the trunk of the Liquidambar styraciflua tree (commonly known as American sweetgum). The resin is secreted when the bark is damaged and collected by scoring and processing the bark. Traditionally called "storax" or "American storax," it has been used in folk medicine for conditions such as stomach pain, eczema, coughs, diarrhea, epilepsy and wound healing; however scientific evidence supporting these uses is lacking[1][5][7]. The main pharmacological activities attributed to this resin are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects[1][5]. It has also been used topically as a skin protectant and in perfumery as a fragrance fixative[5][8]. In foods it serves as a flavoring agent. There are no well-documented clinical trials or regulatory approvals for pharmaceutical indications.
