Overview

Liquiritigenin, also known as 5-deoxyflavanone, is a naturally occurring flavanone found primarily in the roots of Glycyrrhiza species (such as licorice). It is characterized by hydroxy groups at the 4' and 7 positions on its flavanone backbone. Liquiritigenin acts as a selective agonist for Estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), distinguishing it from other estrogens that may also activate Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). This selectivity has led to interest in its use for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Additionally, liquiritigenin exhibits inhibitory activity against Xanthine dehydrogenase/oxidase and has demonstrated antitumor and cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress in preclinical studies[1][2][5].
