Liraglutide (Chia Tai Tianqing)

Liraglutide (Chia Tai Tianqing) is a biosimilar version of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist Victoza, developed by Chia Tai Tianqing Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of Sino Biopharmaceutical). It is a long-acting peptide analogue of human GLP-1 that functions by binding to and activating the GLP-1 receptor. This activation stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion, inhibits glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying, thereby improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug was approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in China in December 2023 for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. Bioequivalence studies have demonstrated that this formulation has comparable pharmacokinetic and safety profiles to the reference product, Victoza. In addition to diabetes, the drug is also being investigated for chronic weight management in patients with obesity.
