Overview

Lisdexamfetamine is a central nervous system stimulant and a prodrug of dextroamphetamine. It is primarily used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children aged 6 years and older, as well as moderate to severe binge eating disorder (BED) in adults[1][2][5]. After oral administration, lisdexamfetamine is converted by red blood cells into its active form, dextroamphetamine. Dextroamphetamine increases the availability of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain by blocking their reuptake and promoting their release from presynaptic neurons[3][5]. Lisdexamfetamine was developed to provide a longer duration of action with reduced abuse potential compared to other amphetamines[5].
