Overview

Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It is also used to prevent kidney problems in people with diabetes mellitus. Lisinopril works by inhibiting the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, specifically blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels. By reducing levels of angiotensin II, lisinopril relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure, making it easier for the heart to pump blood[1][5][7]. Lisinopril was patented in 1978 and approved for medical use in 1987[5].
