The Lister strain smallpox vaccine (VV LISTER/CEP) is a second-generation, live-attenuated, replication-competent vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur for the prevention of smallpox (variola virus). Unlike first-generation vaccines produced in animal skin, this version is propagated in chicken embryo primary (CEP) cells to improve purity and consistency. It is administered via scarification using a bifurcated needle, inducing cross-protective anti-vaccinia antibodies. Developed primarily as a countermeasure against potential bioterrorism, the vaccine has demonstrated safety and immunogenicity profiles comparable to traditional Lister-strain vaccines in clinical trials, with studies confirming antibody persistence for at least five years post-vaccination.
