Listerine

Listerine is a brand of antiseptic mouthwash products, most notably the original Listerine Antiseptic formulation. It contains a specific combination of four essential oils: eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, and thymol. The mechanism of action involves the non-selective disruption of bacterial cell membranes and the inhibition of bacterial enzymes, which effectively reduces the bacterial load in the oral cavity and penetrates dental biofilms. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and reduction of plaque and gingivitis, as well as the treatment of halitosis. Originally developed by Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Wheat Lambert in 1879 as a surgical antiseptic, it is currently owned and manufactured by Kenvue, a consumer health company spun off from Johnson & Johnson.
