Overview
Lithiofor is a branded formulation of lithium used as a mood-stabilizing agent for the treatment and prophylaxis of manic and mixed episodes in bipolar disorder, consistent with other lithium medications. Like other lithium salts, it is thought to act as an antimanic agent by modulating intracellular signaling pathways and neurotransmitter systems, including inhibition of inositol monophosphatase and glycogen synthase kinase-3, which alters second-messenger signaling and neuroplasticity in brain regions involved in mood regulation. Lithium products such as Lithiofor have a narrow therapeutic index and require serum level monitoring to balance efficacy in preventing mood episodes against risks of toxicity, including neurologic, renal, and endocrine adverse effects.
