Overview
Lithium carbonate is a white crystalline inorganic compound used primarily as a mood stabilizer in the treatment and prevention of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness). It is classified as an antimanic agent. The precise mechanism of action is not fully understood but is believed to involve modulation of neurotransmitter activity and inhibition of enzymes such as inositol monophosphatase and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3), which may affect signal transduction pathways in neurons. Lithium alters sodium transport in nerve and muscle cells and shifts intraneuronal metabolism. It has been shown to decrease abnormal activity in the brain associated with mania. Lithium carbonate is also used industrially for glass/ceramic production and other applications[1][5][6][8].
