Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lithium carbonate + quetiapine is a combination therapy consisting of two pharmaceutical agents commonly used in the management of bipolar disorder. Lithium carbonate is a classic mood stabilizer that modulates neurotransmitter activity and intracellular signaling pathways to reduce the frequency and severity of manic and depressive episodes. Quetiapine is an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic that acts as an antagonist at multiple neurotransmitter receptors, including dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. The combination is primarily indicated for acute mania, mixed episodes, or maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder when monotherapy may be insufficient. Clinical studies have shown this combination can increase time to recurrence of mood events compared to monotherapy or placebo[1][7][8]. Both drugs are small molecules administered orally.
