Overview
Lithium gamma-linolenate is a **lithium salt of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)**, a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid. It was developed primarily for its proposed **adjunctive anti-cancer and antiviral properties**, specifically for the treatment of cancer (notably pancreatic cancer) and advanced HIV infection. Lithium gamma-linolenate exhibits **selective cytotoxicity in certain cancer cell lines** and may exert growth-inhibitory effects, with enhanced activity in the presence of iron. It has also been investigated for its potential ability to **reduce the toxicity of antiretroviral agents like zidovudine (AZT)** and to improve hematopoietic recovery by increasing granulocyte production. Its molecular actions derive from the **anti-inflammatory and cell-growth modulating qualities of GLA** and the psychotropic/cytoprotective effects of lithium. Clinical development was led by Scotia Pharmaceuticals under the brand name glamolec[3][4][5].
