Lithium orotate is a salt composed of lithium and orotic acid. It is primarily marketed as an over-the-counter dietary supplement and promoted for use as a low-dose source of lithium. Unlike prescription forms such as lithium carbonate and citrate, which are used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions, clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of lithium orotate is limited. Some noncontrolled studies have explored its use for alcoholism, migraines, depression associated with bipolar disorder, ADHD in children and teens with emotional dysregulation, and other mood disorders[1][2][3]. Mechanistically, it is proposed that the compound may cross the blood–brain barrier more efficiently than other forms of lithium salts[4][5]. However, robust clinical data are lacking to confirm these claims. Lithium acts by modulating neurotransmitter activity in the brain—primarily through inhibition of inositol monophosphatase—which affects signal transduction pathways involved in mood regulation.
