Overview
Lithium succinate is the dilithium salt of succinic acid and is used primarily as a topical drug for the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis. It has also been proposed for use in anogenital warts and was previously investigated for atopic dermatitis, human papillomavirus infections, and mycoses[1][5]. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of cell membrane integrity, contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects[5]. Lithium ions are known to inhibit several enzymes (such as Na/K ATPase, adenylcyclase, prostaglandin E1 synthesis enzymes), act on neutrophils and T lymphocytes, and may have direct inhibitory activity on DNA synthesis in certain viruses[6]. The drug is formulated mainly as an ointment for topical application. Developers include Louis Widmer and Scotia Holdings (ceased)[5].
