Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lithmax is a sustained-release oral tablet formulation of lithium carbonate, a small molecule mood stabilizer manufactured by AA Pharma. It is indicated for the treatment of manic episodes and as a maintenance therapy to prevent or diminish the intensity of subsequent relapses in patients with bipolar affective disorder. The therapeutic action of lithium is attributed to its ability to alter sodium transport in nerve and muscle cells, effect a shift toward the intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines, and inhibit the intracellular formation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). By modulating these neurochemical pathways, Lithmax helps stabilize the mood fluctuations associated with bipolar disorder. It is currently approved and marketed in Canada as a 300 mg sustained-release formulation.
