Litholyte

Litholyte is an over-the-counter (OTC) alkali supplement and medical food used primarily for the prevention and management of kidney stones (nephrolithiasis). It typically contains potassium citrate as its active ingredient, which acts as a systemic urinary alkalinizing agent. Upon ingestion, the citrate is metabolized to bicarbonate, which is subsequently excreted in the urine, raising the urinary pH and increasing urinary citrate levels. Elevated urinary pH helps prevent the precipitation of uric acid and cystine, while increased citrate levels inhibit the crystallization of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. Litholyte is specifically formulated as a more palatable alternative to traditional prescription potassium citrate tablets, often available in powder or coffee-additive forms to improve patient adherence.
