Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lithothamnion calcareum extract is a natural, multi-mineral product derived from the skeletal remains of the red marine algae Lithothamnion calcareum, which is also known as Phymatolithon calcareum. The extract is rich in minerals, containing approximately 12-33% calcium, 1-2.2% magnesium, and 72 other trace minerals. It is marketed as a dietary and nutritional supplement under brand names such as Aquamin and Vitality 50+. While not an approved pharmaceutical drug, research has explored its potential benefits for bone health preservation, prevention of colon polyps, dental enamel mineralization, and for its gastroprotective effects. The algae is sourced from the Atlantic waters off the southwest coast of Ireland and the northwest coast of Iceland.
