Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Litx is a photodynamic therapy (PDT) system developed by Light Sciences Oncology for the treatment of solid tumors, including unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The system consists of talaporfin sodium, a second-generation photosensitizer, and a proprietary light-emitting diode (LED) catheter. Talaporfin sodium is administered intravenously and selectively accumulates in tumor cells and vascular endothelium. The LED catheter is then positioned within the tumor to deliver a specific wavelength of light (664 nm), which excites the photosensitizer. This excitation leads to the production of singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species, causing localized oxidative stress that results in tumor cell apoptosis, necrosis, and the collapse of tumor microvasculature. Despite reaching Phase 3 trials for HCC (the FOCUS study) and cholangiocarcinoma, the development of Litx was terminated after the FOCUS trial failed to demonstrate a significant improvement in overall survival compared to standard care.
