Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liushenwan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of six main ingredients: bezoar (gallstone of Bos taurus domesticus), musk (excretion of Moschus), cinobufagin toad venom (venenum bufonis), pearl (shell of Pernulo), realgar, and borneol[2][5]. It has been used historically for the treatment of infectious diseases such as influenza, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, mumps[5], sepsis[3], and more recently COVID-19[6]. Pharmacological studies indicate that Liushenwan exhibits broad-spectrum antiviral activity by inhibiting viral proliferation and modulating inflammatory responses through pathways such as NF-κB/MAPK and TLR4/NF-κB signaling. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects by reducing cytokine levels like TNF-alpha and IL-1[3][8], antioxidant properties via lowering malondialdehyde content[3], immunomodulatory effects by enhancing macrophage phagocytosis[3], analgesic activity through inhibition of PI3K/Akt and TRPV1 signaling pathways[8], as well as antibacterial actions. Clinical trials have shown efficacy in improving outcomes in respiratory infections including influenza and COVID-19 by accelerating symptom resolution and viral clearance while maintaining a favorable safety profile[6].
