Overview
Liuwei Nengxiao capsule is a multi-component Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Tibetan medicine formulation primarily indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, including functional constipation, indigestion, and abdominal distension. The formulation is composed of six active ingredients: Rhubarb (*Rheum palmatum*), Natrium Sulfuricum (Mangxiao), *Aucklandia lappa* (Muxiang), *Terminalia chebula* (Hezi), *Zingiber officinale* (Ganjiang), and *Corydalis yanhusuo* (Yanhusuo). It operates through a multi-target mechanism where Rhubarb provides stimulant laxative effects via anthraquinones, and Natrium Sulfuricum acts as an osmotic laxative by increasing intestinal water content. The additional herbal components contribute Qi-regulating, prokinetic, and analgesic properties to alleviate abdominal discomfort. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials in China for the management of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in cancer patients, where it is compared against standard treatments like lactulose.
