Liuwei Zhiji Gegen Sangshen

Liuwei Zhiji Gegen Sangshen (LGS) is a functional nutraceutical beverage derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is composed of six medicinal and edible plants: Puerariae lobatae radix (kudzu root), Hoveniae semen (Hovenia dulcis seed/fruit), Imperatae rhizoma (Imperata cylindrica rhizome), Crataegi fructus (hawthorn fruit), Mori fructus (mulberry fruit), and Canarli fructus (Canarium album fruit). The product contains flavonoids, polyphenols, organic acids, and polysaccharides. It has been used in China for alleviating alcohol-mediated discomfort and preventing alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Mechanistically, LGS exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective effects; it modulates gut microbiota and improves lipid metabolism. In animal models of ALD, it attenuates oxidative stress via pathways such as AMPK/SREBP-1 and PPARα signaling; enhances alcohol metabolism by increasing ADH1/ALDH2 activity; reduces CYP2E1-induced oxidative stress; regulates the gut-liver axis; and demonstrates prebiotic activity through its polysaccharide content[6][8].
