Overview

Livalo V is a formulation of pitavastatin, a potent third-generation HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) developed and marketed by JW Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of JW Holdings) in South Korea. It is indicated for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia. Pitavastatin works by competitively inhibiting the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. This inhibition leads to an upregulation of LDL receptors on the surface of hepatocytes, thereby increasing the uptake and catabolism of circulating LDL cholesterol. Livalo V is characterized by its high potency, high bioavailability, and minimal metabolism via the cytochrome P450 system (specifically avoiding CYP3A4), which reduces the risk of drug-drug interactions. Clinical evidence also suggests that pitavastatin has a neutral or potentially beneficial effect on glucose metabolism, distinguishing it from some other statins that may increase the risk of new-onset diabetes.
