Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This live attenuated vaccine is developed by the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products (SIBP), a subsidiary of Sinopharm, for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults aged 40 years and older. The vaccine contains a live, weakened strain of the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) at a potency of at least 4.3 LgPFU per dose. It works by boosting VZV-specific cell-mediated immunity, which typically declines with age, thereby preventing the reactivation of the latent virus in individuals who have previously had chickenpox. The vaccine has progressed through Phase 1/2 clinical trials (NCT03140358) and has advanced to Phase 3 clinical evaluation in China to assess its efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity compared to placebo and other varicella vaccines.
