A live attenuated influenza vaccine H5N1 is an intranasal pandemic influenza A(H5N1) vaccine composed of a cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive, reassortant live attenuated virus derived from an H5N1 strain such as A/Vietnam/1203/2004 and formulated for mucosal administration to induce protective immunity against highly pathogenic avian influenza. The vaccine replicates locally in the nasopharyngeal mucosa at cooler upper-airway temperatures, driving both mucosal IgA and systemic humoral and cellular immune responses, including long-lived B-cell memory that can be rapidly boosted by subsequent inactivated H5N1 vaccination. It has been primarily developed for pandemic preparedness to prime the immune system in advance of, or during, an H5N1 influenza pandemic, with clinical data showing limited primary serum antibody responses but strong anamnestic responses when followed by an inactivated H5N1 vaccine.
