Overview

This live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine is a biologic developed for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults aged 40 years and older. It was evaluated in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial (NCT04334577) involving approximately 25,000 to 30,000 participants in China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. The trial, sponsored by the Jiangsu Province Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and utilizing vaccine produced by Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology, reported a vaccine efficacy of 57.6% against the incidence of herpes zoster. The vaccine contains live attenuated VZV (at least 4.3 LgPFU per dose) and aims to boost cell-mediated immunity to prevent the reactivation of latent virus in the sensory ganglia, which is the underlying cause of neurocutaneous herpes zoster disease.
