Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Live Bifidobacterium refers to pharmaceutical-grade probiotic preparations containing viable bacteria of the genus *Bifidobacterium*, most commonly *Bifidobacterium longum*, *Bifidobacterium infantis*, or *Bifidobacterium breve*. These products are classified as live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) and are primarily used to manage gastrointestinal disorders by restoring a healthy balance to the intestinal microbiota. In clinical practice, particularly in China, live Bifidobacterium capsules are utilized as an adjuvant therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The bacteria exert their therapeutic effects by competing with pathogenic microorganisms for nutrients and adhesion sites, strengthening the intestinal epithelial barrier, and modulating the host's immune system to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines while promoting anti-inflammatory responses.
