Lixelle is a selective beta-2 microglobulin (β2-MG) adsorption column developed by Kaneka Corporation for the treatment of dialysis-related amyloidosis (DRA). It consists of porous cellulose beads covalently bonded with a hexadecyl group, which acts as a hydrophobic ligand to specifically capture β2-MG from the blood during extracorporeal circulation. By reducing systemic levels of β2-MG—the precursor protein for amyloid fibrils—Lixelle aims to prevent or slow the progression of DRA-associated complications, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bone cysts, and destructive spondyloarthropathy. It is typically used in series with a conventional hemodialyzer during hemodialysis or hemodiafiltration sessions.
