Overview

Lizhong is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula originally described in ancient texts such as the *Shanghan lun* and *Jingui yaolüe*. It is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal disorders associated with Spleen yang deficiency and internal cold. The canonical formulation consists of four main herbs: Codonopsis pilosula root (Dangshen), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), Zingiber officinale rhizome-dried (Ganjiang), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis or Glycyrrhiza glabra root (Gancao). The mechanism of action is believed to involve warming the middle burner organs (Spleen and Stomach), tonifying qi, supporting digestive function, modulating gut microbiota composition, regulating amino acid and energy metabolism pathways, reducing inflammation by inhibiting iNOS and COX-2 expression, and activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling. Modern research suggests potential benefits for conditions such as chronic gastritis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), ulcerative colitis associated with Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency Syndrome (SKYD), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, bloating, gas, poor appetite, loose stool due to cold or deficiency patterns[1][2][4][5].
