LJP12 is a homogeneous polysaccharide isolated from the marine alga Laminaria japonica, with a molecular weight of 2.31×10^6 Da. It is composed of arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, and galactose. Preclinical studies in LDL receptor-deficient mice have demonstrated that LJP12 exhibits anti-atherosclerosis activity by inhibiting high-fat-cholesterol diet-induced formation of atherosclerotic plaques and reducing plasma lipid levels. Its mechanism of action involves attenuating systemic and local inflammation through the suppression of the activation of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathways.
