Overview

LL-37 is a human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide encoded by the CAMP gene. It plays a key role in host defense against infection by inhibiting viral replication and has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. LL-37 is also involved in wound healing and reepithelialization of skin wounds, but its expression is reduced in chronic ulcer epithelium. The peptide has been investigated for roles in cancer therapy, with evidence suggesting both tumorigenic and anticancer effects depending on the cancer type. Mechanistically, it can activate Wnt/β-catenin signaling via toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), induce phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt) and glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), promote p38 MAPK and NF-κB p65 pathways, increase IL-6 and IL-1β secretion, activate TRPV2 and PI3/Akt signaling pathways to influence cell proliferation and migration[1][2][4].
