Overview

LL-IL-12D is an experimental recombinant *Lactococcus lactis* (L. lactis) strain engineered to serve as a mucosal delivery vehicle for Interleukin-12 (IL-12) genetic material. It contains a eukaryotic expression cassette with the cDNA of mouse IL-12 (IL-12D). When administered intranasally, this food-grade dairy microorganism delivers the DNA to mammalian cells, leading to the local production of IL-12 protein. IL-12 acts as a potent molecular adjuvant, enhancing antigen-specific cellular immune responses, particularly cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) activity and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) production. It has been studied primarily in the context of therapeutic vaccines for HPV-16-associated tumors, often in combination with strains expressing the E7 oncogenic protein to overcome the weak immunogenicity of tumor antigens.
