LMWC-BRNPs is an oral nanomedicine comprising bilirubin-conjugated low molecular weight water-soluble chitosan. It is being developed for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). In mouse models, LMWC-BRNPs are readily absorbed upon oral administration and reach the liver, where they are primarily taken up by liver macrophages and hepatic stellate cells. The drug modulates dysregulated hepatic immunity to alleviate inflammation and prevents uncontrolled fat deposition by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α) and its target genes, thereby reducing fibrosis and oxidative stress.
