Overview

LMX 4 is a topical anesthetic cream containing lidocaine at a concentration of 4% w/w. It is used to temporarily relieve pain and itching associated with minor cuts, scrapes, burns, sunburn, skin irritations, and insect bites. In clinical settings, it is also used to provide surface anesthesia prior to procedures such as venous cannulation or venipuncture and for the administration of painful topical treatments on larger areas of intact skin where local anesthesia is appropriate[1][3][6]. The mechanism of action involves stabilization of neuronal membranes by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, resulting in localized numbness[3]. Onset occurs within about 30 minutes after application; effects last approximately one hour[6]. The product should not be applied to raw or blistered skin or near the eyes.
