Loaded PGXTEC-ALG is a drug delivery system developed by COSCIENS Biopharma (formerly Ceapro) in collaboration with McMaster University. It utilizes Pressurized Gas eXpanded (PGX) liquid technology (PGXTEC) to process cross-linked sodium alginate into highly porous, open-structured calcium alginate scaffolds or disks with an extremely high specific surface area (~160 m²/g). This unique structure enables the effective loading of poorly water-soluble, hydrophobic antimicrobial compounds (such as fusidic acid, tigecycline, or ibuprofen) via supercritical adsorptive precipitation. The loaded alginate disks or hydrogels are designed for topical application to infected wounds, where they provide sustained drug release, maintain a moist wound environment, and absorb exudates, thereby promoting wound healing and combating bacterial infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
