Local PUVA is a targeted form of photochemotherapy that combines psoralen compounds with UVA light exposure. Unlike systemic PUVA where psoralen is taken orally, local PUVA involves applying psoralen directly to specific affected areas of skin before exposing those areas to UVA radiation. This localized approach allows for treatment of specific skin lesions while minimizing exposure to unaffected areas. The treatment works by having psoralen molecules absorb UVA light energy, which then enables them to interact with DNA in rapidly dividing skin cells, ultimately inhibiting cell multiplication. This mechanism makes it effective for treating various skin conditions characterized by abnormal cell proliferation or immune dysfunction. Local PUVA can be administered in different ways, including: - Topical application of psoralen directly to affected skin areas - Soaking affected areas (particularly hands and feet) in a psoralen solution - Bath PUVA, where the patient soaks in a diluted psoralen solution After application of the psoralen, the treated areas are exposed to UVA light from specialized lamps or light boxes.
