Overview

**Lodoxamide tromethamine** is a synthetic mast cell stabilizer used as a topical (ophthalmic) medication to treat ocular allergy conditions such as **vernal keratoconjunctivitis**, **vernal conjunctivitis**, and **vernal keratitis**. It works by inhibiting Type I immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Its mechanism includes preventing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators (such as peptidoleukotrienes and eosinophil chemotactic factors) by stabilizing the membrane of mast cells and is believed to prevent calcium influx into mast cells upon antigen stimulation. Lodoxamide tromethamine does not have intrinsic vasoconstrictor, antihistaminic, cyclooxygenase inhibitor, or other anti-inflammatory activity. The drug is supplied as a 0.1% ophthalmic solution.
