Lokivetmab is a caninized monoclonal antibody developed for veterinary use, specifically in dogs, to treat atopic dermatitis and associated pruritus (itchiness). It works by selectively binding to and neutralizing canine interleukin-31 (IL-31), a cytokine that plays a key role in the pathogenesis of itch and skin inflammation. By blocking IL-31 from interacting with its receptor, lokivetmab inhibits downstream cell signaling responsible for pruritus and inflammation. Lokivetmab is administered as a subcutaneous injection, typically providing relief within 1–3 days that lasts four to eight weeks per dose. It was the first monoclonal antibody approved for use in animals in both the United States (2016) and European Union (2017), with demonstrated efficacy in reducing clinical signs of atopic dermatitis over long-term treatment periods[1][2][3][5][6][7][8].
