Overview

Lolium allergen extract is a biologic preparation derived from the pollen of *Lolium perenne* (perennial ryegrass). It is used primarily for the diagnosis and immunotherapy of grass pollen-induced allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and rhinoconjunctivitis. The mechanism of action involves gradual exposure to small amounts of the allergen to induce immune tolerance, thereby reducing allergic symptoms over time. This process can increase IgG production and modulate cell-mediated immunity while decreasing immediate hypersensitivity responses. The product may be administered via subcutaneous injection for allergy testing or as sublingual tablets (notably under the brand name Oralair) for immunotherapy. Modified forms (allergoids) are sometimes used to reduce IgE binding and minimize adverse reactions[1][3][5][6][8][9].
