Overview

Lolium perenne subsp. multiflorum pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of Italian ryegrass (also known as annual ryegrass). It is primarily used as a diagnostic tool in clinical allergy practice to identify individuals with hypersensitivity to grass pollens. The extract is typically administered via skin prick or intradermal testing, where it induces a localized type I hypersensitivity reaction (wheal and flare) in sensitized patients. This reaction occurs when allergens in the extract cross-link allergen-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. Approved in the United States in 1965, it is classified as a biological product and may also be used as a component in allergen immunotherapy (desensitization) for patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma triggered by grass pollen.
