Overview

Lomefloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as chronic bronchitis and both complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. It is also indicated for the prophylaxis of urinary tract infections in patients undergoing transrectal or transurethral surgical procedures. Lomefloxacin exhibits bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including *Escherichia coli*, *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*, *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, and *Staphylococcus aureus*. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase (primarily in gram-negative bacteria) and topoisomerase IV (primarily in gram-positive bacteria), which are essential for DNA replication and transcription. This interference leads to strand breakage, supercoiling abnormalities, inhibition of DNA replication/transcription, and ultimately bacterial cell death[1][2][5][8].
