Overview

Lomefloxacin aspartate is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and a small molecule derivative of lomefloxacin. It functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This inhibition leads to double-stranded DNA breaks and bacterial cell death. Developed primarily to enhance water solubility and stability compared to the hydrochloride salt, the aspartate formulation is particularly suited for intravenous or intramuscular injection. It is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including chronic bronchitis, complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), and respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tract infections. It is also utilized prophylactically to prevent UTIs in patients undergoing transrectal or transurethral surgical procedures.
